The Vision for Our Zuma Beach House Kitchen

When we first moved into our Malibu beach house, the kitchen was tucked into a corner of the bungalow, separated from the rest of the living space. Cooking meant turning my back to family and guests, which didn’t suit my style of casual, conversational cooking. I’ve always dreamed of a kitchen with a massive window above the sink, flooding the room with sunshine—a feature I’ve never had in any home I’ve lived in. My Pinterest board is filled with images of kitchens just like that, and now, with our renovation, that dream is finally becoming a reality.

From Closed-Off to Open-Concept

The original kitchen was wedged into a corner, creating a closed-off feeling that made it hard to interact with others while cooking or cleaning. The new design will transform this space into a 1,000 square foot Great Room and Kitchen, seamlessly blending the kitchen, dining, and living areas. This open-concept layout will allow for easy conversation and connection, making the kitchen the heart of the home.

Design Goals for the New Kitchen

  • Open Floor Plan: The new kitchen will be part of a large, open space that feels expansive and connects to the outdoors.
  • Vaulted Ceilings: By raising the ceilings, we’ll create a sense of airiness and allow more natural light to flood the room.
  • Big Kitchen for Entertaining: The kitchen will be large enough to accommodate cooking projects, recipe photo shoots, and gatherings around the island.
  • Lots of Natural Light: We’re adding more windows and doors to the back of the house to maximize sunlight.
  • Clear Front Entrance: The new layout will feature a well-structured path for guests, making it easy to navigate the space.

The New Location for the Great Room and Kitchen

The addition will be situated at the back of the house, creating a seamless flow from the living areas to the outdoors. A bird’s-eye view of the floor plan shows how the new space will fit into the overall layout, with the kitchen at the center of the Great Room. This design will make the kitchen the focal point of the home, perfect for entertaining and family gatherings.

Design Inspiration and Style

Our design style for the Zuma Beach House is a blend of Japandi and modern beach house elements. We’re keeping the 1950s ranch elements that give the house its character, while adding contemporary touches for a fresh, minimalist look. The kitchen will feature natural materials, clean lines, and a neutral color palette to create a serene, inviting space.

Materials and Finishes

Materials are key to the design of our beach house, and we’re using a mix of natural and cozy elements throughout the kitchen. Here are some of the materials we’re incorporating:

  • Wood: Light oak cabinetry and flooring for warmth and texture.
  • Stone: Quartz countertops for durability and a sleek look.
  • Tile: Large-format tiles for the backsplash, adding a modern touch.
  • Brass: Hardware and fixtures for a touch of elegance.
  • Concrete: Used for the island base, adding an industrial edge.

Key Features of the New Kitchen

  • Massive Kitchen Window: A large window above the sink will flood the room with natural light and offer views of the outdoors.
  • Large Island: The island will be a central gathering spot, perfect for cooking, dining, and socializing.
  • Ample Storage: Custom cabinetry will provide plenty of storage for kitchen essentials.
  • Integrated Appliances: Appliances will be seamlessly integrated into the cabinetry for a clean, streamlined look.
  • Outdoor Connection: Sliding glass doors will open to a patio, blurring the line between indoor and outdoor living.

Guest House Renovation

In addition to the main house, we’re also renovating the 600 square foot guest house. The current space is a one-room apartment above the garage, with a small kitchenette and a bed. We’re keeping the footprint but transforming it into a boutique hotel-style one-bedroom suite. The guest house will feature a chic, minimalist design with natural materials and expansive views of Zuma Beach.

Challenges and Solutions

Renovating a beach house comes with its own set of challenges, from permitting to working with the existing structure. Here are some of the challenges we faced and how we addressed them:

  • Permitting: The permitting process in Malibu was lengthy and complex, but we stayed patient and persistent to get our plans approved.
  • Structural Changes: Adding a 1,000 square foot addition required careful planning to ensure the new space would integrate seamlessly with the existing house.
  • Material Selection: Choosing materials that are both beautiful and durable was essential for a beach house environment.
  • Lighting: Maximizing natural light was a priority, so we added more windows and doors to the back of the house.
